Erling Haaland was at his clinical best as his double gave Manchester City a comfortable 3-0 victory against 10-man Young Boys in the UEFA Champions League.

The Norwegian was named in the starting XI by Pep Guardiola after overcoming an ankle problem as his side secured their place in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.

The same couldn't be said for Newcastle United though as they fell to a 2-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund, leaving their hopes of qualification in the balance.

How Man City's match unfolded

In typical fashion, City dominated the ball and created several chances to open the scoring.

Rico Lewis, one of six changes made by Guardiola, came close to finding the net, but had his shot cleared off the line.

Young Boys goalkeeper Anthony Racioppi then made a double save, first denying Kyle Walker from a free-kick before then reacting quickly to prevent Phil Foden from scoring.

But City finally broke the deadlock when Matheus Nunes drew a foul inside the penalty box and Haaland stepped up to slot the spot-kick.

Just before half-time, the defending champions took control as Foden scored a wonderful goal.

The 23-year-old took a pass from Jack Grealish before going round a Young Boys defender and then coolly slotting the ball into the bottom-left corner.

Six minutes after the break, Haaland put the match to bed by producing a fine finish into the top corner.

City stepped off a gear following the third goal as they cruise into the last 16 of the Champions League, and for an 11th season in a row, having won all four of their group-stage matches as they secured their 100th win in European matches.

The champions will hope to continue this fine form in the Premier League when they face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Not a perfect night for City

The only negative from City's evening was an injury to John Stones after he was withdrawn at half-time with Guardiola confirming the blow in his post-match interview.

"I feel so sorry for him because he is an incredible professional, and it is a big loss for us.

"John is so important for what he does, [but now he needs to] recover, the season is long and [he] will be back stronger."

When asked if Stones will be out for an extended period of time, Guardiola replied: "Yeah, I think so."

Newcastle's Champions League hopes falter

Newcastle United suffered a major setback in the UEFA Champions League as they fell to a 2-0 loss against Borussia Dortmund.

Goals in each half from Niclas Fullkrug and Julian Brandt gave the German side a well-deserved victory as they leave the Magpies with a lot of work to do to qualify for the last-16 stage of the competition.

How Newcastle's match unfolded

With several players missing through injury, as Dan Burn became the latest name to be added to that list, Eddie Howe made three changes to the trip to Dortmund.

Two of those players to be brought in were Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall, as they both made their Champions League debuts.

However from the first minute, both would get a taste of how difficult their evening would be as Dortmund created several chances.

Fullkrug and Karim Adeyemi drew Nick Pope into action in the opening 20 minutes.

And Dortmund would not have to wait much longer to open the scoring.

After Newcastle failed to clear the ball in their defensive area, Marcel Sabitzer played the ball across the six-yard box to Fullkrug who had the simple task of scoring into a near-empty net.

That goal sparked Newcastle into life though, and they started to dominate the ball.

Their confidence in the match grew, and they should have found an equaliser in the second half through Joelinton who headed wide from inside the box after Livramento crossed the ball.

But more time passed, and on the counter-attack Dortmund sealed the contest.

Adeyami cleared his lines and Brandt ran from his own half before firing a low shot past Pope into the bottom-right corner.

Newcastle now face a tall order to qualify and will likely have to get a result against Paris Saint-Germain in three weeks' time.
