Holders Liverpool will take on West Ham United in one of three all-Premier League ties after the draw for the third round of the EFL Cup was made on Wednesday evening.

The other encounters will be between Everton v Southampton and Brighton & Hove Albion v Wolverhampton Wanderers, who all beat lower-league opposition in round two.

Ten Premier League sides to progressed into the third round of the competition, with only Ipswich Town failing to reach the next stage.

New format to third-round matches

The new format in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) and UEFA Europa League (UEL) means that there is a different style to the third round of the EFL Cup.

The matches will take place in the weeks commencing 16 September and 23 September, the same weeks where the UCL and UEL matches will be played.

To ensure there is no clash of fixture dates, a club participating in the Champions League do not draw a club participating in the Europa League, to enable the round-three fixtures to take place in the alternate week.

There were no upsets on Tuesday night as Brighton, Everton, Leicester, Fulham and Crystal Palace all comfortably dispatched lower-league opposition.

It was another impressive victory for Brighton under head coach Fabian Hurzeler, who made it three wins from as many matches. However, the victory came with some disappointment as one of Brighton's new signings, Matt O'Riley, was forced off with an injury after only six minutes.

Elsewhere, Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta scored one of the goals of the round, with a superb bicycle kick.

In Wednesday's matches Newcastle needed penalties to overcome Nott'm Forest as Sean Longstaff struck the decisive spot-kick to seal their place in the next round.

Joe Willock opened the scoring early after only 19 seconds while Sandro Tonali was named in the starting line-up following his 10-month ban from football. Newcastle were pegged back when Forest's Jota Silva equalised with a superb strike for his first goal for the club.

In the other all-Premier League tie, Jarrod Bowen continued his fine start to the season with an 88th-minute winner against Bournemouth as Julen Lopetegui earned his first home win as West Ham head coach.
