Murillo signs new deal at Nottingham Forest

Chris Wood has signed a new contract with Nottingham Forest, extending his stay at the City Ground until 2027.

New Zealand international Wood is the second Forest player to commit their future to the club this week, following Brazil defender Murillo, who agreed a deal earlier this week until 2029.

"I’m very excited and very happy to have it completed and done, and I’m looking forward to the next couple of years, at least," Wood told the club's official website.

“I saw the ambition when I first arrived. When I spoke to the owner and his family and saw where they want to be and where they see this Club to be - it was clear they have high ambitions and big dreams. He has backed the Club for years, even before promotion to the Premier League, which is fantastic, and the team is pushing in the right direction.

“I’m excited for the future. This Club has a lot of potential to continue to grow and build, and that is what I want to be a part of. I can’t thank the fans enough, they always come in voice and they’re always behind the team and myself, it’s a pleasure playing in front of them. Here’s to a few more years together."

Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis added: “He has performed exceptionally well with us. More than just his goals, he epitomises everything that it means to wear the Garibaldi Red – hard work, a fighting and wining spirit, and the attitude to never give up. He is a winner and a role model to inspire all of us, and we reward his dedication with ours.”

Wood initially joined Forest on loan from Newcastle United in January 2023 and scored his first goal for the club the following month, a late equaliser against Manchester City

Though an injury prematurely ended his 2022/23 season, that goal would prove to be the first of 29 league goals for the striker at Forest.

Returning fully fit for the 2023/24 campaign, Wood netted 14 times in 31 league appearances, including a hat-trick against his former club, Newcastle.

This season, the 33-year-old has continued his excellent form. He has netted 14 goals in only 22 Premier League matches so far, placing him joint-fourth in the league’s scoring charts alongside Cole Palmer, and trailing only Mohamed Salah (18), Erling Haaland (17), and Alexander Isak (15).

Wood’s ability to deliver in key moments has been a major factor in Forest’s incredible start to the campaign.

With several match-winning goals to his name, including Ipswich Town, Manchester United and Southampton, he has been instrumental in helping Forest climb to third in the Premier League table, putting them firmly in contention for European qualification.

In October, Wood’s contributions earned him the Premier League Player of the Month award, making him both the first Forest player and the first New Zealander to win the accolade.

Forest are next in Premier League action on Saturday when they visit AFC Bournemouth.
