The annual Christmas Truce tournament is more than just a football competition; it's a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War and an opportunity for young Academy players to learn about history, camaraderie and the power of community through the lens of sport.
A unique blend of football and education
The Premier League Truce Tournament offers Academy U12 players a chance to test their footballing talent against top European Clubs while gaining an understanding of the historical events that shaped our world.
The tournament takes place in Ypres, a city steeped in history, where the young players not only compete on the pitch but also engage in off-field educational activities.
This year's programme was enriched by an educational project leading up to the tournament.

As part of the "Power in Pals" theme, focusing on "The Footballers Battalion," academies undertook three interactive missions:
- Creating a Team Portrait: Reflecting unity and teamwork.
- Designing a Recruitment Poster: Honouring the historical efforts of recruitment during the war.
- Fostering Friendships: Promoting the importance of community and togetherness.
These activities highlighted the importance of friendship and resilience, reflecting the spirit of the Christmas Truce, a powerful moment of unity during the First World War.
Seventeen out of the twenty Premier League, along with a host of Football League clubs participated in the education project competition, with the goal of securing a place in the tournament in Ypres by winning the educational challenge.
The Journey to Belgium
Five academies secured their places through qualifying football events held in November: Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Newcastle United, and Southampton. Joining them were three additional Clubs that impressed with their educational projects: Brentford, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Middlesborough.
Representing the European contingent were Bayer 04 Leverkusen, RSC Anderlecht, KRC Genk, and Toulouse, symbolising the nations that fought in the fields of Ypres.
"I really enjoyed the research we did around the battles in Belgium during WW1," said Middlesbrough Under-12 player, Thomas March.
"Going to Catterick Garrison was amazing, seeing the tanks and listening to the soldiers’ stories was great! I also liked going to the Mosque and seeing all the Muslim children smile when we did our play about the Muslim soldiers and the story of the Christmas Truce. It was mint."
Immersive historical learning
While in Ypres, the young players took part in deeply impactful activities, including visits to the Christmas Truce memorial in Mesen and Tyne Cot Cemetery, an immersive trench experience, and participation in the Last Post Ceremony at Menin Gate.

These experiences gave the players a profound understanding of the sacrifices made by previous generations and the enduring power of unity and community.
Barry Dawson, Head of Education at Middlesbrough FC, eloquently captured the essence of the project.
"The principles of the Christmas Truce projects are intrinsically linked to the principles and core values of academies up and down the country," he said. "The project allows the children to understand in great depth the sacrifice others have made for the good of society and why it’s important to give something of yourself to your own community.
"Football had the power to stop a war! This project has the power to influence and teach children some of life’s greatest lessons, helping others and giving to your community. The growth and development in the young people who have taken part in the project is so plain to see.
"A greater sense of others, the importance of giving, improved communication, leadership, and self-empowerment were all evident during the course of the project. These skills will have longevity in a young person's life."
