Jeriah Boateng, an Under-12 player from Brighton & Hove Albion's academy, has been named the Premier League's Young Academy Writer of the Year 2024 for his powerful story Back in Time.
Adversity to Opportunity
Inspired by his own experience with racism, the 11-year-old's story creatively imagines a conversation with Laurie Cunningham, who made history in 1977 as the first black footballer to represent an England international team organised by The Football Association when he was called up to the England U21 side while playing for West Bromwich Albion.
Through this imagined dialogue, Cunningham shares invaluable lessons on resilience and overcoming adversity.
In reflecting on the theme of the competition, 'Heroes', Jeriah shared, "I began brainstorming ideas and then it hit me - I could explore this concept further.
"Vinicius Junior's experience with racism stood out and I felt it would create a meaningful connection."
Judges commended Jeriah for his ability to transform his personal challenges into a compelling narrative, showcasing both maturity and creativity.
Encouraging excellence on and off the pitch
The Premier League Young Academy Writer competition aims to nurture and promote literacy skills among young players at Club academies, emphasising the importance of education alongside sports.
This initiative encourages young athletes to develop their potential both on and off the field.
Jeriah expressed his enthusiasm about the Premier League Academy Writer's competition, noting, “I've really enjoyed it, as it encourages children to focus on personal development off the pitch.
"Winning has boosted my confidence to write a published book and provided incredible experiences, like having the Premier League Trophy visit my school. I've also had the chance to meet Brighton's first-team players and icons like Rio Ferdinand."
As this year’s winner, Jeriah's school, Whitgift, was honoured with a visit from the Premier League Trophy, alongside reading and writing workshops led by best-selling children’s author Dan Freedman.
These activities inspired students and highlighted the transformative power of storytelling.
Building on Success
Jeriah's journey did not stop with the award. Building on his success, he has already expanded his award-winning story into a full-length book.
He follows in the footsteps of previous winners such as Rico Hinson-King, whose story 'Strong and Tough' was published by Bloomsbury.
Be part of this year's challenge
This season's competition, themed around 'The Ref', is now open and ready for young writers to participate, offering another opportunity for Academy players to showcase their creativity and storytelling skills.
Young academy players are invited to explore the pivotal role of referees in football and beyond.
This prestigious event provides a platform for players to share their stories and celebrate the power of words to inspire change. Don’t miss the chance to turn your ideas into a masterpiece!
