As the season kick-off draws closer, The Scout continues the search for players with the potential to enjoy an upturn in fortunes, focusing on a fit-again goalscorer.

After a summer of movement at St Mary's Stadium, Fantasy Premier League managers will be forced to reassess Southampton's prospects for the season ahead.

With last term's top scorers, Graziano Pelle and Sadio Mane, now departed, new manager Claude Puel will be hoping that Charlie Austin (£6.5m) can emerge as the Saints' chief source of goals.

Arriving last winter from Queens Park Rangers after producing 10 goals and an assist in 16 Championship appearances, Austin made an immediate impact by netting a debut winner at Manchester United in Gameweek 23.

His minutes were rationed over the run-in and the new striker managed only seven league outings due to hamstring and knee complaints. Indeed Austin failed to add to his Old Trafford effort.

However, a look back to the campaign beforehand, when he thrived in spite of QPR's relegation, is far more convincing.

Over 35 appearances, Austin scored 18 of the R's 42 goals and also chipped in with eight assists.

The new ICT Index highlights his importance. Across the 2014/15 campaign, Austin was ranked third top forward for Influence and second when it came to Threat - a score of 1829 was bettered only by Sergio Aguero's 2007 up front.

So far in pre-season, the signs suggest that Austin could emerge as a contender for our three-man frontlines.

Having returned to full fitness, the forward has netted twice, scoring in wins against PEC Zwolle and FC Groningen as the Saints regroup under Puel.

Furthermore, the opening schedule hands Southampton three very favourable home fixtures in the opening five Gameweeks, as Watford, Sunderland and Swansea City travel to St Mary's.

Although he also visits Man Utd and Arsenal during that period, Austin has already scored on the road against both sides during his brief stint in the top flight.

If he can claim a starring role in Puel's plans and remain injury-free, FPL managers could have a bargain on their hands.
