Manchester United put the pressure on Arsenal by going top of the table with a 6-2 victory at Newcastle United.
Newcastle took the lead through Jermaine Jenas but Paul Scholes’ hat-trick and goals from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ryan Giggs and Ruud van Nistelrooy secured a United win.
Shola Ameobi got a late consolation goal, as Newcastle remained in third.
United had played a match more but went three points clear of second-placed Arsenal, whom they would face four days later having cut the Gunners' superior goal difference to just one.
