On 22 July 2002 Manchester United strengthened their defence with the signing of Rio Ferdinand.

The 23-year-old centre-back arrived from Leeds United and enjoyed a glittering 12-year career at Old Trafford.

He had a dream debut season, making 28 appearances as United lifted the Premier League Trophy, and went on to win another five titles with the club as he formed a formidable partnership with Nemanja Vidic.

Ferdinand also captained the team when they beat Chelsea in the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League final.

In total he made 312 appearances for United, scoring 10 goals, before leaving in 2014 for Queens Park Rangers.

Ferdinand announced his retirement the following season.
