Ahead of the visit of leaders Liverpool on Saturday, Palace lie 12th having picked up four wins, including one at Old Trafford, and three draws.
"The biggest thing since I have joined Palace is we have always started slow, we have always given ourselves too much to do," Townsend said.
"Every year we try and say, 'Come on, guys. Let's pull our finger out a bit earlier'.
"This season was the opposite, we were delighted with our start."
The Liverpool match comes amid a run of five consecutive opponents from the top six, with 2-0 defeats by Chelsea and Leicester City their most recent results, but Townsend is looking at the bigger picture.
"We knew about this daunting run we had with the top six sides all in a row," said the winger. "We've probably picked up a couple of points less than we would have liked.
"But we're still in mid-table and we can have a real go for it in December once we've got Liverpool out of the way."
