Match summary

Newcastle United v Burnley

Burnley extended their unbeaten run to six matches with a goalless draw at Newcastle United.

The hosts had the better chances in a hard-fought match at St James’ Park but are now four league matches without a goal.

Newcastle almost went in front twice during the first half. Matt Ritchie steered his far-post header wide, while Miguel Almiron’s low shot was easily saved by Nick Pope.

In the second half, Dwight Gayle fired an acrobatic effort wide and Ritchie again was unable to put his effort on target as Burnley held firm.

Chris Wood returned from injury as a substitute, but could not help Burnley record a double over the Magpies.

Burnley rise to ninth on 38 points, while, despite ending a two-match losing streak, Newcastle are 14th on 32 points.
