"It’s a big step for me and it’s always been a dream of mine to sign for one of the biggest clubs in the world," the 23-year-old told Chelsea's official website. "Today I have achieved that goal and I’m so happy.
"Playing in the Premier League is something I’m really looking forward to doing and I hope to learn many things here at Chelsea. I can’t wait to meet everyone and play at Stamford Bridge."
The Blues are adding greater depth to their goalkeeping department after the departures of Edouard Mendy to Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League, and Kepa Arrizabalaga on loan to Real Madrid, and Gabriel Slonina on loan to KAS Eupen.
Friedel: Best MLS 'keeper
The 23-year-old Petrovic replaced Matt Turner at New England after the American goalkeeper signed for Arsenal last year.
Former Liverpool, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Brad Friedel has spoken very highly of Petrovic and expects him to usurp Robert Sanchez for a starting place.

“He’s been the best goalkeeper in MLS by a country mile,” Friedel told Football Daily.
“Once he’s given the chance I don't see him being displaced. I think Dorde is the No 1.”
Chelsea’s next Premier League fixture is at home to Nottingham Forest on 2 September.
