Nottingham Forest confirm sacking of Cooper

Nuno Espirito Santo says he has been appointed as Nottingham Forest head coach to build on the legacy of his predecessor Steve Cooper.

The 49-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half year contract at the City Ground, and will be in the dugout for the first time on Saturday when Forest host AFC Bournemouth.

"What Steve [Cooper] did here is amazing," Nuno said.

"Putting Forest back in the Premier League, keeping Forest in the Premier League. That shows how good Forest fans are, the respect they show for Steve. That says a lot about our fans.

"We are trying to improve his legacy.

"What we can bring is to try and improve the players. Help players become better, give them the solution that they need to compete well - starting on Saturday.

"Play good and win - that's the biggest challenge we have ahead of us. It's a huge challenge."

Nuno arrives at Forest with his new side sitting five points above 18th-place Luton Town, who have played a match fewer.

Premier League

Position Pos Club Played Pl GD Points Pts
16 Brentford BRE 38 -9 39
17 Nott'm Forest NFO 38 -18 32
18 Luton LUT 38 -33 26
19 Burnley BUR 38 -37 24
20 Sheffield Utd SHU 38 -69 16

Forest have won only once in 13 matches, taking a single point in their last six encounters.

When asked about whether he feels the squad will need strengthening during the January transfer window, Nuno made it clear that he will give the players currently at his disposal every chance to impress before making any decisions.

"We have a good group of players, a squad that needs to become better,” Nuno added.

"Look, the only ones that can and should improve things, it's those that are here now.

"What I expect is the players that are here in the building solve the situation - then we think about the rest. But now it's who's inside that's important.

"What I saw today really gives me the assurance we are in a good way in terms of togetherness.

"The players work together, they respect each other. That is the first step.

"I never managed a squad of this size. That will be a challenge. But a chance for everybody."
