Newcastle pressed for an equaliser, Joelinton's first-time volley flying narrowly wide of Nick Pope's post and Dwight Gayle denied by the Burnley goalkeeper late on.
Victory moves Burnley up to 12th place on 21 points.
A first defeat in three leaves Newcastle a place and point above the Clarets.
