Dario Poveda scored a late winner as Villarreal began their Premier League International Cup campaign with a 3-2 victory over Benfica in Brighton.

Simon Moreno made it 1-0 to Villarreal in the Group F tie on 37 minutes, but Benfica were level four minutes after the break through Heriberto.

The final five minutes of the match had a flurry of goals. Genis Montolio made it 2-1 to Villarreal, before Joao Felix equalised for Benfica and then Poveda, a 20-year-old striker, kept his composure in the final minute of normal time to score the winner.

Villarreal's next fixture in the competition is a trip to West Ham United on Wednesday 4 Ocotber.
