James Ward-Prowse struck in either half as Southampton fought back from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw at Brighton & Hove Albion.
Brighton took the lead after only 1 minute and 14 seconds with a close-range finish by Danny Welbeck following Marc Cucurella's cross. It was the second fastest-goal in the Premier League this season and both Welbeck's and Brighton's earliest strike in the competition's history.
Mohammed Salisu put through his own net to double Brighton's advantage after 44 minutes but Ward-Prowse pulled one back in added time with a superb low free-kick into the bottom corner.
Southampton pressed for an equaliser straight from the restart and that pressure paid off when Ward-Prowse levelled with a crisp finish from distance following an Oriol Romeu backheel.
Brighton thought they had won it in the 79th minute but Pascal Gross's fine finish was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.
Brighton are 11th with 41 points, two places and a point above Southampton.
