West Bromwich Albion missed the opportunity to make up ground on relegation rivals Newcastle United as they battled to a goalless draw at The Hawthorns.
Newcastle, who went into the match nine points and two positions above 19th-placed West Brom, started brightly with Emil Krafth forcing a save from Sam Johnstone.
West Brom grew into the match and Mbaye Diagne had two first-half chances, shooting over following Darnell Furlong's long throw before seeing a header pushed away by Martin Dubravka.
Matt Phillips then blasted a good opportunity over shortly into the second half, before Diagne headed wide.
Johnstone ensured West Brom at least gained a point in their fight to avoid the drop as he made good saves from Joe Willock and Joelinton.
Newcastle move up to 16th on 27 points, one above Brighton & Hove Albion in 17th.
West Brom are on 18 points, eight from safety.
